This Week Under The Book Shepherd’s Roof:

Hello and Good Publishing Day to YOU.

The last of the snow from last week’s kiss of winter and low temps that lasted for a week has left my back deck. It was cold … but inside, at Saturday’s AuthorYOU Podcasting meeting, no one was frozen … it was hot! Huge thank yous to Mara Purl and Kelly Johnson who joined me for the program. Are you missing out? Did you know that almost 40% of all adults listened to at least one podcast in the last 30 days? That means over 100 million people. And, did you know that over 80% of all listeners LISTEN in for the majority of ALL of the podcast? Those stats are huge? Are you missing out here? Is there a podcast show in you?
In last Saturday’s program, I shared the latest stats for my own podcast—AuthorU- Your Guide to Book Publishing. Each podcast is originally published on a Thursday. In October, there were five Thursdays and I did the entire month solo, meaning just me with no guests—sharing my personal marketing and publishing insights, strategies and tools on a specific marketing topic (platform building, avoiding predators, book marketing in general, marketing tools, and publicity gathering). Audience response was HUGE, showing downloads for each show averaging in excess of 10,000 listeners. Wowsa.

Take-aways: never under-estimate the power of your own voice and expertise. Typically, I have guest experts … but sometimes, it just makes sense to reinforce your own branding, positions and how-tos.

Wrapping up my Saturday, I delivered a closing talk via Zoom for the annual meeting of the Independent Publishers of New England. They were in Massachusetts … I was in Colorado.

We have webinars popping—this Thursday is on audiobooks; next week on Book Launches. Details on the website, under Events.

Sunday, I started swimming again. And, then, the bloody hard drive on my computer died. Gads.

Have you checked out my Snappy Sassy Salty Cat Quotes for Authors and Writers on Pinterest? Have had more fun creating at least three new posters for pinning each day. Check it out and DO SHARE them on your Pinterest accounts. Yup, they are snappy, sassy and sometimes a tad salty. Find them HERE.

November 1 kicks off National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo)—are you joining in this year? Many thousands do as they strive to write the first draft of a novel within the 30 days. It’s quite a focused push—have fun if this in your wheelhouse.

The end of the year months always bring in lots of events and things to do. Add these to your calendar now. Details will all be posted under the Events tab on the website.

1. November 23 - Annual Author Holiday Tea from 1 to 4 (food, free and fun)

Questions of the Week:

Question: : Should I start a podcast?

Answer: Last week, we did a program of the what, when, why, where, and how of creating a podcast. The "who" is you. Podcasting should start with branding—yours and it. You don’t want to experience pod fade, meaning you start and drop out. Like those who start a blog and then dribble addition blogs, eventually stopping. The value of podcasting is enormous—including that over 80% of listeners LISTEN to the entire program—be it 15 minutes or an hour. Think of the influence you can have? If you will do the homework you need for the setup, make the commitment, then my response is, just do it.
