This Week Under The Book Shepherd’s Roof:
Hello and Good Publishing Day to YOU.

It’s a "swamped" week as I get ready to do the "deep" Publishing at Sea workshops this coming week aboard the beautiful Allure of the Seas next week. In four days, 36 authors gather to learn, play and relax.

AuthorYOU rolled out its new face over the weekend. Members officially joining saved 30% of the annual registration fee. We are in the process of gathering all the discounts up and posting them on the Member login site (we will do a separate mailing to members so they have the codes and passwords for each). We had a terrific program with a packed room of authors at all stages … those just beginning their writing and authoring journey and those published many times over. Loved, LOVED, the high energy that flowed through the meeting room and enjoyed the insights of book awards from Mara Purl along with what I shared about creating book events and celebrations.

Yesterday afternoon, I rolled out the first of the monthly NO PITCH webinars … just information to get authors moving and planning forward for 2019 in all things in the marketing arena. The Tuesday NO PITCH series is designed for AuthorYOU members-only—invitations do not go out to the general public in my social media channels or within this ezine and replays only available to the membership. WOW—the hour went fast!

It’s a swamped week as I get ready to head out with 36 fantastic authors on Saturday afternoon for the 6th annual Publishing at Sea

And a heads up—hold the FIRST Saturday of each month—February is all about Author TOOLS … online and off to use to soar your success. The date is February 2nd and starts at 9 a.m. Location is the Koelbel Library in the Metro Denver area. March will be a Mini-one-day Extravaganza with a focus on all things Book Marketing. Coloradans, get registered NOW – Early Bird registration end on January 25th. Cost is $22 for AuthorYOU members and $30 for guests. It increases $10 on the 26th.

ALERT: So many tell me that they NEVER get info from us for months—meaning no blogs, ezine, announcements—literally zip. Make sure that you have Judith@Briles.com and Office@AuthorU.org in your address book and clear them as GOOD emails to receive info.

AND … the New Year is off and running!

JAN formally kicks off the new AuthorYOU … did you join?
If you didn’t it’s a publishing boo-boo. Feedback from Saturday’s in-person gathering was excellent. Several first-timers joined immediately. The online NO PITCH one-hour only webinar that focused on new strategies for the New Year yesterday got "fantastic" feedback. And wait ‘til you see the bundle of goodies and discounts we are starting to post on the website for Members only. All will be up before the end of the month. Yup, it’s a good idea. Not a paid-up member? JOIN AuthorYOU today.

A huge thank you to AuthorYOU member Dave Westfall for doing the track down for me in dealing with all the tax-related questions that the June 2018 Supreme Court Ruling created in it probably is best to collect sales tax on book sales.  not indeed!

The answer depends on what State the Author lives in…
example, in Colorado:

There is a threshold that triggers compliance for out-of-state sellers. Only companies that have processed more than 200 transactions or done $100,000 in sales in Colorado during the current or prior tax year have to collect. No such threshold exists for in-state sellers.

They have to comply whether they make 10,000 sales a year or one sale.
Meaning—if you live in Colorado and sell to individuals who are in Colorado, collect sales tax. If they are collectively out-of-state, keep track of the number of transactions and gross sales. If you bypass the threshold—first, do a happy dance—and second, pay the taxes.

WEBINARS – 2019 … The FIRST focuses on getting your next book (or your first) … but awesome tips for betting it done FAST … as in a flash. It’s TODAY. Why not plan on another book this year … before summer? Why not indeed!

And the SECOND is the Ask Judith Anything Replay. Forward, this feature will be available only to AuthorYOU members.

How many times have you had a brilliant idea while:

• Driving down the interstate at 70 MPH?
• Standing in line at the checkout?
• On the phone with a prospect, client, or your favorite family member?
• Having cocktails?

You know, in that moment, you should write it down.
Or call yourself and leave yourself a message. Or mention it in a Skype or Messenger chat so you can scroll back through the log and find it later.
Or whatever.

Maybe you DO take down the idea.

Either way, when you fire up that Word doc or pull out that yellow pad and pen to work on your book, you find yourself asking yourself things like:

• "What was that brilliant idea I had at Costco the other day?"
• "I know I wrote it down, but WHERE?"
• "They had COCKTAIL NAPKINS and PENS for crying out loud... why didn't I use them?!?"

Just the frustration of trying to remember that brilliant idea can cause writer's block. How? You're reluctant, either consciously or subconsciously, to write because …

NO MORE after this all-new webinar with Dan Janal, creator of PR Leads and on the original marketing team that brought us all, "You've Got Mail" ... Your next book ... blog ... your whatever will be doing a happy dance after this hour.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. And YES, it will be recorded. Make sure you register so that you get it.

Questions of the Week:

Question: Are there steps to writing a book?

Answer: Sure—I would encourage you to listen in and participate in the webinar with Dan Janal today. It will be available on replay. With that said, identify what you are passionate about. Next, I look at books with a what’s the problem; what caused it; what’s the effect; and what’s the solution? Solve the problem, then work backwards to fill in the other questions. Start writing. Get to a draft. Start self-editing. Rewrite. Get a professional editor involved … and start moving toward the publishing.
