Recommended Book Printing Printers from The Book Shepherd™

A day doesn’t go by when questions don’t come in via phone or email asking about “which” printer to use for a book.

The companies below I have personally printed my own books with as well as referred hundreds of authors to directly and mentioned them on my podcast. Therefore, each is highly recommended.

Total Printing Systems
Charlie Tlapa

Charlie@tps1.com

250 to 1500 is their sweet spot. Excellent quality in children’s’ books and color. Has some terrific tools and techniques. Can warehouse and ship out as well. All services are done in-house.

Color House Graphics
Sandy Gould
Sandy@colorhousegrapics.com

250 to many thousands.
if a book has racy content and lots of swearing in content, CHG isn’t a fit. LOVE the new process where a trade paper can have a “spot kote” on it and raise as if embossed.

Case bound bounds will be pricier here—binding is done on the outside and then brought back in.

Sheridan Books
Kathy Brown
Kathy.Brown@Sheridan.com

250 to thousands
CJK Group has been on a buying spree, picking up Sheridan a year ago. Now Sheridan has just taken over Thomson Shore (as in this week), which I loved working with — Maria Smith is still there). I would ask Kathy to get quotes from Bang Printing as well –part of the CJK Group.

Thomson Shore
Maria Smith
marias@tshore.com

Print and digital—small runs to mega thousands (they print for Scholastic as well). Does high-end customized end sheets as well as covers. All services are done in-house.

Friesens (Canadian)
Tim Hewitt
TimH@Friesens.com

Excellent color—especially for landscape, cookbooks, kids. I’ve done multiple printings with them. Sometimes print turn-around as a tad longer.  500 to many thousands.
they cross the border at North Dakota, and ship from there to the states.

Four Colour Print Group
George Dick
gdick@fourcolour.com

For overseas, George has always been my go-to. China and Korea. He’s got printing connects in the States as well. Quality on the excellent side.

Overseas has dropped to 500 in some cases—but usually, 1,000 is the minimum.

IngramSpark   … POD – print on demand
IngramSpark.com

Set up an account, load your book in. You can do IS for your primary. Most of my clients use it as a supplemental to a regular print run. Highly recommended for bookstore access and/or library availability.

NOTEIf a company is not on this list, we do not recommend them. Usually because of bad customer service or quality of printing
